About Us

Toddlers have an innate sense of curiosity, and that should be encouraged.  My own toddlers were fascinated with the wild birds that would come visit our bird feeder, wondering what they were and practicing identification.  That is how Toddler's Field Guide was born.

Kelly Hodgkin - Author

Kelly has always been an animal lover and never missed an opportunity to learn something new about all different species of wildlife. In 2017, she graduated from the University of Maine with a B.S. in Zoology.

Kelly grew up in Connecticut and now lives with her husband and 3 young sons on their homestead in Maine. After seeing her toddlers react to the different birds at their bird feeder, she realized that even an 18 month old child can identify and differentiate between different bird species. Kelly then set off to create something specifically for toddlers to use to identify birds they can see from their window!

She loves seeing her kids’ faces light up when they learn something new, especially if they are outside experiencing nature at the same time. This book was inspired by them.

Erica Whaley - Illustrator

Erica is a New England-based part time printmaker, full time occupational therapist. She learned about printmaking by chance when she took a class in her last year of college, and fell in love with it!

She was so excited when her friend Kelly asked her to use her skills to create prints of many birds she learned about growing up, and to share her art and the printmaking medium with others.

She also likes to bake, watch movies, go for a walk on a sunny day, crochet, and try new foods. She lives in Connecticut with her husband and their tiny cat, Cordelia.
